Louisiana History Museum, currently located in downtown Alexandria, is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting and promoting understanding of the wealth of history associated with Alexandria, and all of Louisiana. The Museum maintains one of the foremost col- lections of historical objects in the state.
An effort was begun in the early 1970s by Angelique Staford "Gic" Kraushaar to establish a museum in Alexandria that would not only describe the history of Louisiana, but also show the unique beginnings of Central Louisiana. Dale Genius became the director of the museum in 2004. His love of Alexandria and the museum is legendary. He produced several collections that told the city's history and its involvement in military history. He established the museum website and complied a pictorial collection on the history of the Hotel Bentley. Timothy Hollingsworth, a library and museum volunteer, became the curator in 2017 and developed the Alexandria Historical Trolley Tours into a valued asset of the museum. Friends of the Louisiana History Museum was formed in 2020 to support and promote the museum. It promotes activities, the raising of funds for: special projects and encourage community awareness of our rich cultural historical past.
We have outgrown our space at our current location! The museum has expanded from several display cases upstairs in the Alexandria Genealogical Library to over 50 displays and exhibits on the ground floor.
As of March 1, 2021 we purchased the historic Shiloh Building at 930 Washington Street as the future home of the Louisiana History Museum. Funds are now needed to secure and restore this historic structure.
Your financial support is essential to our success and will leave a lasting legacy.
Expansion will allow educational opportunities for the community to experience the multi-cultural heritage of Central Louisiana.
Completion of this project will aid in the development of the Louisiana History Museum as a tourist destination that will draw visitors to Alexandria and Central Louisiana.
Contributions to the Louisiana History Museum as a 501 (c) (3) organization 100% tax are deductable.
We will continue efforts to have this building placed on the National Registry of Historic Places that provides indirect, partial protection of the historical integrity of the property.
